"It ain't over till it's over."
Yogi Berra
On May 1, President George W. Bush declared the combat phase of
the Iraqi war to be over. Yet, more American and British soldiers
have died since that date than before it. When we entered the war,
we considered the "worst case scenario" to be the use of toxic gas
or tactical nuclear weapons. But perhaps we failed to consider
guerilla warfare as a possibility. That is just what this war has evolved
into.

No one has ever found a successful way of defending against guerilla
tactics. We couldn't stop it in Vietnam, Israel has not found any way
to stop the suicide bombers and other tactics employed by the hard
line Palestinian militants and militant Muslims in many third-world countries continue to cause havoc.. The problem is, you never see a
tangible enemy until too late.

The stated objectives of the Iraqi war were to capture or kill Saddam
Hussein, to destroy the weapons of mass destruction and to set up a
democratic government in Iraq. None of these things have been
accomplished and the war threatens to stretch out into years rather
than the weeks or months we expected at the start. Worse still, Osama
Bin Laden is still at large and Al Qaida is still in business.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to finish one war before launching
another?
